Does Medicare cover home blood collection?
Short answer: Medicare does not cover the fee for a nurse to visit your home. The tests on a doctor's request form may still be eligible for Medicare, billed by the laboratory under its own policy. Private tests ordered without a referral are not covered by Medicare.
The home visit fee
A home visit is a private service. With Express Pathology it costs $129 in metro areas and $149 in regional areas when you have your doctor's request form, and you pay it upfront when you book.
Tests on your doctor's request form
When your doctor gives you a request form, the laboratory that processes your sample decides how each test is billed. Tests that meet Medicare criteria are often bulk billed. Tests that are not on the Medicare schedule, or that do not meet its criteria, may be charged privately by the laboratory. If you are unsure, ask your doctor or the laboratory before your visit.
Private tests without a referral
When you order a blood test online without a GP referral, the test is private, so Medicare rebates do not apply. You pay one upfront price, shown before checkout, and there are no surprise bills from the laboratory.
Private health insurance
Coverage for private pathology and home collection varies between funds and policies. Check with your insurer before you book if you plan to claim.
